Former Kentucky point guard and two-time NBA champion Rajon Rondo likely is to join the Kentucky coaching staff as a student assistant, Kentucky Sports Radio reported Friday.

Rondo, 36, played 39 games last season with the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers, but he didn't sign with a team for the 2022-23 campaign.

Per the report, Rondo is back in Lexington, enrolled in classes toward his degree and "hanging around the basketball offices," adding he is in conversations with coach John Calipari about joining the coaching staff for the 2023-24 season.

Rondo was a Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team selection and played two seasons at Kentucky (2004-06) before he was the No. 21 overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft.

Rondo spent 16 NBA seasons with nine teams, including eight-plus seasons with the Celtics. His best years came in Boston, where he was named to four straight All-Star teams (2011-14) and twice was selected to the All-NBA defensive team.

In 957 career games (733 starts), Rondo averaged 9.8 points, 7.9 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game. His 7,584 career assists rank him 14th all-time in NBA history.
